FSDB was very lucky recently to host an alumni from its class of 1938 on campus for a visit. Ms. Bernita Gilberstadt graduated from the school's Blind Department 70 years ago. She plans to celebrate her 90th birthday in April.
She remembered sitting on her bed in her dorm at McLane Hall at 9:00 p.m. one evening in November, 1935. She was studying math with another classmate when the room began to move and sway. "My bed was shaking too," she said, "and we wondered what was going on, and it moved and shook for nearly 10 minutes." The next morning, their dorm matron, Mrs. Koger, "who we all loved," she said, came and told them it had been an earthquake with the epicenter in Palatka.
Ms. Gilberstadt remembered the grand day when FSDB acquired its first school bus, in 1936. "It was wonderful!" she said, "and we all had to go sit on it because it was new." In those years, students travelled to school by train and only went home twice a year, once at Christmas and once in the summer. Since FSDB had not had a school bus before 1936, the students were usually taken to the train in a truck.
Daughter Julie accompanied her mother on the campus tour. She said her mom had a great sense of humor and still volunteers to transcribe print into Braille for other blind/visually-impaired residents.

The FSD Team (Bethany Baker, Tyler Church, Ken Love, Stephen Murgatroyd, Michael Veley and coaches Mandy Nolte and Andy Tao) is to be commended for a fine job well done. Keep in mind that 80 teams all across the United States competed in 5 regions. Only the top two teams in each region get to compete at the National Academic Bowl level. Having come in 6th place overall, that makes us into the top 10% of the schools nationwide! Go Dragons...we will have three players returning next year!!!
